Robben Island

20 of us volunteers took a ferry over to Robben Island (where Nelson Mandella and so many others were imprisoned during apartheid) yesterday after placement. It was such an enlightening experience. We got a tour of the island on bus, then a tour of the actual prison on
foot. Our tour guide was a man who was imprisoned there for 5 years. He spent a lot of time actually working in the kitchen during his imprisonment and said he will never eat fish, bread, or soup for the rest of his life! We got to see Nelson Madella's actual cell where he lived for 18 years (although he was in prison for 27 years). We also saw the garden where he would bury his writings while he was in prison, that would eventually become the book "A Long Walk to Freedom". It was very humbling to learn more about this place and all of the amazing history.

One of the many beautiful views while on the island. You can see the whole city of Cape Town in the background

There are over 1,500 penguins on Robben Island, so of course we ran into some! This picture is for you Emily!
